The best Mexican restaurants in Athens

That’s right! Mexican food! It’s a well-known fact among my friends and family that I love it! At the sight of it my eyes grow big, my mouth starts salivating and my heart beats faster. It’s true! Now my friends are probably thinking “Did she seriously just upload a post about Mexican food?”, to which I answer “Of course my darlings!”.

I’ve been to a few restaurants here in Athens, and I’ve also had Chipotle in London (yes I went to a Mexican restaurant in London 😛 ), but not all of them were good. In fact, some of them were mediocre. Which brings me to why I uploaded this post: I want to show you which, among those I’ve been to, are the best.

Ancho Mexican Grill

My #1, my favorite, the one I compare every other Mexican restaurant with. If it had delivery service I would be twice my size!

It resembles Chipotle, in the create-your-own-plate philosophy.  You have the base (burrito, burrito bowl, tacos, quesadillas, nachos and salad) and a variety of ingredients to choose from. There are also sides and deserts in the menu, as well as a kids menu. And of course a variety of drinks.  Ancho is suitable for vegetarians, vegans and has gluten-free options.

Taste-wise, it is the best Mexican I’ve ever had. And that’s not only my opinion since it’s usually full of people.  There are tables inside, one outside and one upstairs. In the background there is latin music playing. The environment is great for everyone.  It also isn’t very expensive (my favorite dish for example costs 5,80€) and the price depends on the extras you choose.

The very first restaurant is at Chalandri (Kolokotroni & Grigorio Gyftopoulou 9). After that opened one at Kifissia (Kassaveti 9) and much to my surprise and utter delight there is also a new one at Glyfada (Giannitsopoulou 3). My baby is expanding 😥

Mejico

Situated at Argyroupoli (about 5min from the metro, on foot – 10 Thrakis str. & 28th October str, Argyroupoli), this restaurant offers a variety of Mexican recipes, as well as a few pasta, pizza and paella dishes. The plates are pretty big, so they are quite filling. It also has desserts, some international, some Mexican and a variety of drinks (wines, beers, spirits, as well as cocktails). If you are into white wine, a great choice is Vina Esmeralda (Miguel Torres), which has a great fruity/flowery taste and an amazing fragrance.

Every Tuesday night, they offer Margaritas with 5€ and tacos with 1€. If you are planning to go in the evening, you better book a table, because it gets packed. The price range is between €€-€€€, not very expensive, but also not very cheap. In the background there is latin music playing.

Amigos

Another Mexican restaurant, with Mexican plates is Amigos. It doesn’t have the variety of Mejico, but taste-wise it’s pretty good. Also, like Mejico, the plates are big and filling. It has a few options of wines, beers, cocktails and spirits, but offers quite a range of tequilas. Unlike the previous two restaurants, it has the option of a lunch menu, where you choose a salad, a main dish, a drink and a dessert (Blackberry Cheesecake) for the price of 14,50€.

Just like with the other two restaurants, there is latin music playing in the background. It’s pretty big, so I don’t think a reservation is required, but if you want to be on the safe side, then call them and make one.  The price range is also €€-€€€.

It has two branches, one at Nea Smirni (about 5min from tram station Aghia Fotini, on foot – 70 Megalou Alexandrou str) and one at Glyfada (65 Kiprou str).

El Taco Bueno

On the ouside it looks like a house

This was the very first Mexican restaurant I went. It used to be located elsewhere and was a lot smaller. Unfortunately, I haven’t been there lately, but it left a good impression and thus made the list.

It is currently situated a few meters away from Aghia Paraskevi (metro) station, of line 3 (blue line), at 110 Aghias Paraskevis str, Chalandri. It has tables both on the inside and on the outside, and from what I’ve been told, the outside seems pretty great for summer.

The cuisine is mostly Mexican, but has three burger choices, with a Mexican twist, and has dessert. The drinks are like any other restaurant, a few beers, a few wines, a few spirits etc, it doesn’t have a variety of tequilas or cocktails or whatever. The price range is also €€-€€€.

I hope you like them as well, should you visit.

Till next time! 😉
