Daytrip to Kithairon Mountain

Kithairon mountain (or as the Greeks call it, Kithaironas), is located at the border between Boiotia and Attica. It is composed mainly of limestone and is 1,409m high.

My boyfriend and I decided to go there for a daytrip, to admire the view, stay somewhere for the night and return to Athens the next day. It is only a few hours’ drive from the center of Athens (about 2h from Syntagma square, till the top).

We didn’t have a specific plan in mind, so we left early in the afternoon, stopped at a village named Vilia, to get something to eat and then continued for the top of the mountain.

The scary part was when the two-way street became one way. Fortunately, there is enough space for two cars, but you have to be careful, because there are no bars and the cliff is high 😛

When we reached the top, we realized three things. One, it was VERY windy. Combined with the 3°C, our lack of proper attire and gloves, we almost froze. Two, the snow that hadn’t completely melted away, so we couldn’t drive a bit further like we wanted and had to walk that distance. Three, the atmosphere was very hazy and the photos didn’t turn out as good as I expected.

We didn’t expect it to be so windy, because it’s not like that all the time and it consequently lessened our stay. Fortunately, there were a few places to take refuge and warm up a bit.

Apart from the cold, the view was totally worth it. We stayed there for a few hours, took some pictures/videos/time-lapses and then left. We stayed at Alepokhori for the night and then returned to Athens.

Except from admiring the view, there aren’t many things you can do there.

If you are a view sucker/want to go on a road trip/want to see something off the beaten track, I totally suggest it. Would I go there again? Probably on a calmer and warmer day!

If you decide to go for the weekend, or even for a day, I suggest that you also visit the villages Porto Germeno, Psatha and Alepokhori.

Till next time! 😉
